On March 28, Lesia Bohuslavska, Head of the Publishing Projects “Dictionary Heritage of Ukraine” and “Ukrainian Grammar Classics” of the Public Organisation “Rotary Club Kyiv City”, and Rostyslav Voronezkyi, a consultant to these projects, presented and handed over a number of editions to the Library of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine and the Editorial and Publishing Department of the Secretariat of the Court, in particular:
1. Ukrainian Language Dictionary: in 3 volumes (compiled by B. Hrinchenko) is a reprint of the 1927 edition (Series “Dictionary Heritage of Ukraine”) and is one of the pearls of Ukrainian Lexicography. It was created as a result of revision and supplementation of the Ukrainian Language Dictionary edited by B. Hrinchenko. The dictionary fully reflects the directions of development and standardisation of the Ukrainian literary language in the 20s and 30s of the 20th century.
The dictionary, which for almost a century had been in oblivion under the stigma of “nationalist”, can now be useful to a wide public of Ukrainian language connoisseurs, as it has preserved vivid, sometimes forgotten and little-known treasures of the national literature;
2. Russian-Ukrainian Dictionary: in 4 volumes (editor-in-chief: academician A. Krymskyi) is a reprint of the 1924 edition (Series “Dictionary Heritage of Ukraine”)
“The Russian-Ukrainian Dictionary in 4 volumes is a remarkable landmark of Ukrainian lexicography, a monument to the “Ukrainian cultural renaissance of the 1920s in the realm of linguistics” (Yu. Shevelov), the first academic dictionary that in the 20s and 30s of the 20th century established the renewed Ukrainian literary language, laid the groundwork for the spread of the Ukrainian language in various spheres of its application.
The Dictionary reflects the effective creative pursuits of renowned linguists in the field of lexicography, daring decisions in the selection of Ukrainian equivalents to foreign lexis and formal and semantic adaptation of borrowings, as well as the trends in the formation of literary language norms of the time.
3. The book “Norms of the Ukrainian Literary Language” written by the prominent Ukrainian linguist Oleksa Syniavskyi, reprint of the 1931 edition (Series “Dictionary Heritage of Ukraine”), is a systematic description of the structure of the new era Ukrainian language, presented in the context of orthoepic and spelling norms in accordance with the Ukrainian Spelling Book of 1928. The author comprehended and commented on the vast linguistic material in order to organise, establish and develop the Ukrainian language spaciousness of Ukraine
Acting Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine Serhiy Holovaty and the Secretariat representatives were acquainted with these editions and commended the guests for the dictionaries. As Serhiy Holovaty underscored, “The work on revitalisation of the Ukrainian language, cleansing it from the patina of the Moscow language, is extremely momentous nowadays. To this end, the compilation of the modern Russian-Ukrainian Law Dictionary is of paramount significance.”
