Acting Chairman of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine Viktor Kryvenko met with the Special Advisor of the Secretary General of the Council of Europe for Ukraine Régis Brillat

 

On November 8, 2017 Acting Chairman of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine Viktor Kryvenko met with the Special Advisor of the Secretary General of the Council of Europe for Ukraine Régis Brillat at the Constitutional Court of Ukraine.

Judge of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine Stanislav Shevchuk, the First Deputy Head of the Secretariat of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine Larysa Biriuk and staff of the Secretariat of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine also took part in the meeting.

Special Advisor of the Secretary General of the Council of Europe for Ukraine Régis Brillat stressed on the complexity of the situation in Ukraine, in particular the challenges that face both the whole country and the judges of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine. He recalled that the Council of Europe is currently implementing an Action Plan for Ukraine.

Régis Brillat thanked for exchanging views on the issues of social protection, which took place in February this year at the Constitutional Court of Ukraine and expressed the desire to continue these professional meetings.

Acting Chairman of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine Viktor Kryvenko told about the constitutional reform in Ukraine and the current activities of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine, taking into account the amendments to the Constitution introduced in September 2016. He informed the guest about the state of affairs in the Constitutional Court of Ukraine, in particular the new powers of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine, the procedure for the formation of the Court, the establishment of the right to an individual constitutional complaint. According to the Acting Chairman, the Constitutional Court of Ukraine received a lot of constitutional complaints, some of which were returned, such as those that did not comply with the requirements of the law.

Viktor Kryvenko also noted on the events at the Constitutional Court of Ukraine related to the implementation of the Law of Ukraine "On the Constitutional Court of Ukraine", in particular, the preparation of the Rules of the Procedure of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine. According to him, the text of the Rules of the Procedure has been prepared and processed by the judges and will soon be submitted to the Court session.

The Constitutional Court of Ukraine has currently received 46 constitutional petitions, most of which concern social issues, noted Acting Chairman of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine. "We search for a compromise between the rights of one person and the rights of society as a whole, and our Decision must satisfy the needs of society", said V. Kryvenko.

At the end of the meeting, the interlocutors noted the long-term cooperation between the Constitutional Court of Ukraine and the Council of Europe and expressed hope for further cooperation.
