Judge of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine Stanislav Shevchuk attended the meeting of the Federalist Society for Law and Public Policy Studies
On June 4 – 7, 2014 upon the invitation of the International Affairs Director of the Federalist Society for Law and Public Policy Studies, Judge of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine Stanislav Shevchuk attended the meeting of the European Judicial Network of the above Society which took place in Vienna, Austria.
The conference was also attended by the representatives of the bodies of constitutional jurisdiction from Georgia,Poland, Slovenia, Hungary, judges of the European Court of Justice, the European Court of Human Rights, U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.
The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the role of constitutional courts in providing independent balance between the authorities of the European Court of Human Rights, European Court of Justice and the European Commission and those of of national courts; current challenges faced by judges of the constitutional courts and current problems of the protection and promotion of the independence of the judiciary (in regard to appointment, dismissal of constitutional and supreme court judges, bringing to disciplinary liability); measures taken by constitutional courts to prevent the use by the parties of the national constitutional reform process as a means of consolidating political power.
Judge Shevchuk made a presentation on the national judicial system in the context of the recent social and political events in our country taking into account the adopted Law of Ukraine on Restoring Confidence in the Judiciary as well as the implementation of the European standards of independence and impartiality of judges in the context of the judgments of the European Court of human rights "Oleksandr Volkov v. Ukraine", "Baka v. Hungary" and " Erdoğan v. Turkey".
In addition to the scientific and practical program, Stanislav Shevchuk took part in several meetings with his foreign counterparts, during which the constitutionalists discussed co-operation and improvement of the activity of the national and European courts on the way to the rule of law.
The Federalist Society is a Washington, D.C. – based association of approximately 45,000 lawyers, law students, judges, and law faculty. The organisation began networking with European judges who believe in promoting the rule of law, judicial independence, fundamental freedoms, judicial restraint, and national sovereignty.
