Judge of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine Stanislav Shevchuk met with Canadian Election Observation Mission representatives

 

 

On October 8, 2014 judge of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine, Chairperson of the Standing Commission of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine on International Relations StanislavShevchuk met with the legal analyst of the Canadian Election Observation Mission (CANEOM) Anne-Marie DeLorey.

Having analysed the elections in Ukraine in the previous years, the political, social and economic situation in the country and the importance of coordinating efforts to conduct fair and transparent elections, CANEOM representative prepared a number of questions for the Constitutional Court of Ukraine. In answering them, Stanislav Shevchuk provided extensive information about the tasks and powers of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine concerning constitutional petitions and appeals, principles of formation of the Court’s composition, functions of the Secretariat of the Court, statistic data on cases considered by the Court.

Furthermore, the parties discussed the perspectives of amendments to the electoral legislation, including the draft Election Code of Ukraine, the process of adaptation of the electoral legislation of Ukraine to the EU standards, preparation for extraordinary parliamentary elections in Ukraine and a number of other important issues that arise before the participants during the pre-election race.

The interlocutors also touched upon the issues of the judicial system of Ukraine and its reform, the role of constitutional courts in ensuring proper balance of powers of the European Court of Human Rights, Court of Justice of the European Union, the European Commission and the powers of national courts.

Among other issues there were also discussed the process of training of lawyers and judges in Ukraine, issues that arise during the preparation of future specialists in law, and the specific features of application of the constitutional norms and principles by the courts of Ukraine.

An conclusion Stanislav Shevchuk and Anne-Marie DeLorey expressed hope for further mutual cooperation and wished each other success in further activity.
