Representatives of the Ukrainian World Congress International Election Observation Mission to Ukraine's 2019 Elections
visited the Constitutional Court of Ukraine

On September 2, 2019 representatives of the Ukrainian World Congress International Election Observation Mission to Ukraine's 2019 Elections (UWC Mission) visited the Constitutional Court of Ukraine.

The meeting was attended by the Chairman of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine Natalia Shaptala, Deputy Chairman of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine Oleksandr Tupytskyi, Head of the Secretariat of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine Yaroslav Vasylkevych, Deputy Head of the Department of Organisational Work - Head of the Department of Organisational Support and Hardware Work of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine Maryna Arshevska, Head of the UWC Mission Eugene Czolij, Vice President of the World Congress of Ukrainian Youth Organizations Teona Kakhiani, Coordinator of the UWC Mission Volodymyr Kistianik.

At the beginning of the meeting the Chairman of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine Natalia Shaptala welcomed the guests, noting the importance of the activity of the UWC Mission.

“The Constitutional Court of Ukraine highly appreciates the contribution of the UWC Mission to the unification of Ukrainians worldwide. Our common goal is that Ukraine prosper and our citizens proudly call themselves Ukrainians,” Natalia Shaptala stressed.

 The Head of the UWC Mission Eugene Czolij emphasised that according to the results of the UWC Mission observation, the elections in Ukraine complied with the international standards for democratic elections. The Head of the UWC Mission also informed the attendees of the recommendations made by the UWC Mission upon the short-term observation. “The UWC Mission recommends that the Ukrainian authorities, in cooperation with international organisations, examine new initiatives that would facilitate participation in elections for Ukrainians abroad,” he pointed out.

Special attention was paid to the Decision of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine No. 6-r/2019 dated June 20, 2019 in the case upon the constitutional petition of 62 People’s Deputies of Ukraine regarding conformity to the Constitution of Ukraine (constitutionality) of the Decree of the President of Ukraine “On Early Termination of Powers of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine and the Appointment of Early Elections”. “The Constitutional Court of Ukraine adopted a historic decision. We understand that the process of adopting this decision was extremely difficult since the attention of the whole Ukrainian and international community was drawn to the consideration of this case,” the Head of the UWC Mission highlighted.

According to Deputy Chairman of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine Oleksandr Tupytskyi, citizens should be given greater opportunities to participate in the political life of the country, in particular by introducing the latest information technologies into the election process.

During the meeting the interlocutors discussed other topical issues and expressed their hope for further fruitful cooperation.
