Volodymyr Shapoval

 

Volodymyr Shapoval was born in 1948 in Kyiv in a servant’s family.

He graduated from the Law Faculty of Kyiv Taras Shevchenko State University (at present Kyiv Taras Shevchenko National University) in 1970.

He began his professional career at Koretskyi Institute of State and Law of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine as a post-graduate student, then junior research assistant at the Department of International and Comparative Law.

From 1976 he served as a lecturer, senior lecturer, associate professor at Kyiv Higher School of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the USSR (at present National Academy of Internal Affairs of Ukraine).

From 1986 he lectured at the Law Faculty of Kyiv Taras Shevchenko State University and held the positions of associate professor, professor of the Department of Constitutional Law, Head of the Human Rights Department.

In September 1996 he was appointed Judge of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine by the President of Ukraine.

At the special plenary session of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine he was elected Deputy Chairman of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine from October 19, 2002 until October 18, 2005.

Doctor of Legal Sciences, Professor, Corresponding Member of the Academy of Legal Sciences of Ukraine.

Decorated with the Order of Merit, 3rd class.

Distinguished Lawyer of Ukraine.

Author of a number of scientific works, textbooks and monographs on the theory of state and law and constitutional law issues. As a member of the working group of the Constitutional Commission he participated in drafting the Constitution of Ukraine.

Volodymyr Shapoval’s authorities were terminated on October 19, 2005.
