The Ukrainian Lingua-Information Foundation of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine handed over 14 volumes of the Dictionary of the Ukrainian Language in 20 Volumes to the Library of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine.
The twenty-volume Dictionary of the Ukrainian Language is an academic explanatory dictionary of the Ukrainian language created under the programme of the National Dictionary Base of Ukraine. The first edition of the Dictionary was completed in 2001-2006 under the leadership of Academician V.M. Rusanivskyi, and its first volume was published in 2010. To date, 14 volumes of the Dictionary have been published.
This Dictionary is the successor to the eleven-volume academic Dictionary of the Ukrainian Language (1970-1980). In the process of compiling it, a great deal of work was done to de-ideologise it, to free it from the vestiges of the totalitarian era that made up a significant part of its predecessor.
The twenty-volume Dictionary of the Ukrainian Language covers the commonly used vocabulary of the modern Ukrainian literary language, common terms, dialects and established phrases. The sources used in the Dictionary reflect the diversity of fiction texts from the 18th century to the present day, as well as the Bible, folk art, journalism, etc.
Each volume of the Dictionary contains over 10,000 dictionary entries. They are intended for a wide range of users, primarily those interested in the Ukrainian language.
The Constitutional Court of Ukraine expresses its gratitude to the Ukrainian Lingua-Information Foundation of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, represented by its Director Volodymyr Shyrokov, for the dictionaries that will be useful for the court staff in their work.
